Traction Boards

Traction boards are portable plates designed to give a vehicle’s wheels a firm surface to grip when driving on soft or slippery ground. They are commonly used on mud, sand, snow, or wet grass where tires would otherwise spin without moving the vehicle forward. Typically made from durable plastics or composite materials, they have textured surfaces and teeth that bite into both the ground and the tire. To use them, you place the boards in front of or behind the driven wheels and then gently accelerate so the tires climb onto the boards and regain traction. Traction boards are lightweight, easy to carry, and don’t require a second vehicle or complex gear, which makes them useful for solo travelers. They come in different lengths and load ratings, so choosing the right type for your vehicle and conditions matters. While very helpful, they aren’t a cure-all: severe bogging, hard obstacles, or vehicle damage may still require winching or towing. Proper placement, safe recovery practice, and regular inspection for cracks or wear keep them reliable when you need them, and having them in your kit can save time and reduce vehicle strain during recoveries.
