Mosquito Repellent
A mosquito repellent is a product you put on your skin, clothing, or nearby surfaces to keep mosquitoes from biting you. It works by confusing or blocking the insects' senses so they are less likely to land and feed. Common active ingredients include DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, and products treated with permethrin for clothing and gear. Using a repellent lowers your chance of itchy bites and the allergic reactions they can cause, and it reduces the risk of getting illnesses some mosquitoes carry. Applying it properly means following the label, covering exposed skin, and reapplying when the protection wears off or after swimming or sweating. Some repellents are safe for children when used according to directions, but others should be avoided with infants or used only on clothing. Treating clothing and outdoor gear with certain products can give long-lasting protection without repeated skin application. Repellents are a practical part of planning outdoor activities in mosquito-prone areas and are most effective when combined with other measures like screens, nets, and removing standing water. Choosing the right type for your age, activity, and local insect risks helps keep you comfortable and safer outdoors.
