Urine-diverting Toilet

A urine-diverting toilet is a toilet designed to keep urine and solid waste separate from the moment of use. Instead of letting everything mix, the bowl or pan directs liquid to one outlet and solids to another so each stream can be handled differently. That separation reduces odors, makes solids easier to dry or compost, and simplifies treatment of the liquid. Because the toilet does not need to flush large volumes of water, many designs save a lot of water and are available in dry or low-flush versions. Collected urine contains nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus, and after proper treatment and dilution it can be reused as a fertilizer for some plants, turning waste into a resource. Solid waste can be composted or stabilized in a separate container, which avoids creating wet, hard-to-handle sludge that requires large treatment systems. These toilets are useful where sewer connections are absent, water is scarce, or people want a more sustainable way to manage waste. They help reduce pollution of lakes and rivers by cutting the flow of nutrients and pathogens into waterways. To be safe and effective, urine-diverting systems need regular maintenance, clear user instructions, and management plans for treating and using collected materials. When done correctly, they conserve water, recover nutrients, and lower the environmental impact of human waste.
